Behind the Viola

Devan Maria holds a Master's degree from New England Conservatory where she studied under the Dimitri Murrath. She also holds a Bachelors of Music degree in Viola Performance from Brigham Young University where she studied with Dr. Claudine Bigelow. Performing has always been a part of Devan's life. She has studied with many teachers including Carolyn Wyman (Bellevue, WA), Dr. Cynthia Morrow (Kirkland, WA), and Lucy Ackherst (London, England) since the age of 5.

Devan currently frequently plays with the Ballet West Orchestra, is a member of the Orchestra at Temple Square and often plays in recording sessions in and around Salt Lake City Utah.

Devan has had the opportunity to perform all over the United States as well as in Quebec, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Turkey. These performances have been varied: as a soloist, part of chamber groups, and with the BYU Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra and Baroque Ensembles.

Devan won the BYU Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition as a freshman in January 2013 and was able to solo with that group. She has been a finalist in the Utah ASTA string competition as well as the BYU Philharmonic Concerto competition twice.

Devan always looks for opportunities to learn and work with great teachers. She has earned the chance to play in  masterclasses for Antione Tamestit, George Taylor, Jean Sulem, Donald Maurice, Ivo Van der Werff, and James Dunham among others.

Devan actively searches for ways to serve others through music. During her time at BYU, she headed a program called Partners in the Arts which paired university students with less-privileged youth to teach music lessons. She also had the chance to co-organize Concerts at Noon, a weekly, informal, concert series for the campus population and surrounding public.

Devan loves to teach. Her private students have been placed in advanced ensembles and she has been praised for her patience and creativity. Devan has also coached at the Lyceum Youth Music Festival. She loves helping bring music to the next generation.

When not performing or teaching, Devan can be found traveling, spending time with family, exploring nature, or curled up with a good book.
